BUCHAREST, Romania -- U.S. Navy Adm. James Stavridis, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), upon the invitation by Romanian Adm. Gheorghe Marin, Chief of Defense of the Romanian Armed Forces, visited Romania April 27-28.

BUCHAREST, Romania — U.S. Navy Adm. James Stavridis, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), upon the invitation by Romanian Adm. Gheorghe Marin, Chief of Defense of the Romanian Armed Forces, visited Romania April 27-28.

While there Stavridis met  with the head of state, His Excellency Mr. Traian Basescu, and he also met Mr. Gabriel Oprea, Minister of Defense.

Stavridis visited Romania as part of his plan to visit every NATO nation during his tenure as SACEUR, which began in July 2009.

"I would like to thank the president and the people of Romania for the invaluable contributions Romanian troops are making to NATO operations,” said Stavridis. "Training the Afghan Security Forces is key to the success strategy and the additional Romanian troops are very welcome."

Stavridis had detailed discussions with the Chief of Defense and his staff on matters related to the Romanian troop increase in Afghanistan and other NATO operations and opportunities.

After these important meetings, Stavridis participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where he honoured those who died for Romania.

Before departing, Stavridis indicated his pleasure with the productive talks and impressions from this visit and expressed his gratitude to those who had participated on the preparation and execution of the visit for their enthusiasm and warm welcome.
