BERN, Switzerland - Navy Adm. James Stavridis, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), visited Switzerland from 3 – 4 June on the invitation of the Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces, Swiss Lt. Gen. Andre Blattmann.
While there he met with the Head of the Federal Department, Mr. Ueli Maurer, the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Peter Maurer, and the Head of Security Policy, Ambassador Christian Catrina.
At the beginning of his tenure as SACEUR in July 2009, Stavridis declared his intention to pay a visit to all Partner and NATO countries and he continued to fulfill this goal with his trip to Switzerland.
" My top priority during my visit here is to say thank you," Stavridis told Swiss officials "The Swiss participation in key missions is superb. I am particularly pleased with the Swiss Armed Forces contribution in Kosovo where they serve extremely effectively with over 200 troops.”
During his visit to Switzerland Stavridis addressed the 3rd International Disaster and Risk Conference (IDRC) in Davos were he briefed the audience on the future needs and potential solutions for Humanitarian Logistics.
At the Geneva Center for Security Policy, NATO's Senior Military Commander provided the representatives from permanent missions, international organizations, the academic community and civil society organizations with a special and first-hand guide to the latest developments in the Alliance's Comprehensive Approach, currently being tested in Afghanistan.
Stavridis expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality. He emphasized his strong satisfaction with the productive talks and the positive impressions he would be taking home from this visit.
