U.S. Office of Defense Cooperation Funds School Renovation in Kalivaç, Lezhë
In a ribbon cutting ceremony today in Kalivaç, Lezhë, a newly renovated school was officially opened for use by the region’s children. Attending the ceremony were Acting Deputy Chief of the U.S. Embassy, Paul Poletes, Chief of Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) Albania, Major Kevin Bosch, U.S. Army European Command representative Lt. Col. Amy McCall and School Principal Drita Gjini.

In a ribbon cutting ceremony today in Kalivaç, Lezhë, a newly renovated school was officially opened for use by the region’s children. Attending the ceremony were Acting Deputy Chief of the U.S. Embassy, Paul Poletes, Chief of Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) Albania, Major Kevin Bosch, U.S. Army European Command representative Lt. Col. Amy McCall and School Principal Drita Gjini.

Initiated in November 2009, the renovation project valued at $591.00, was overseen by the ODC, and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Improvements to the school included renovation of the exterior walls, repair of the roof, and the replacement of doors, windows and tile flooring. New fire exits and modern bathrooms were installed, as well. Also, a new well was dug. Approximately 220 children will benefit from this project. Children attend the school not only from the District of Lezhë but also from the adjacent Districts of Pukë and Kurbin.

This project is as a part of an integrated approach to improve educational facilities in Albania and thus improve Albanian children’s learning. Projects such as this school renovation represent the continuing commitment of the U.S. Government, through the Department of Defense, to assist the Republic of Albania.

The Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) manages the U.S. Department of Defense’s Humanitarian Assistance program, providing direct humanitarian assistance to the Albanian people. This program has been active in Albania since 1996, providing supplies and rebuilding schools and medical facilities, developing water projects, and conducting many other non-military projects.
